Dr. Vohra seems like a very serious man. He is not the warmest person to deal with but he knows what he is doing. I had my surgery on March 20, 2003 and I have no regrets. His office is fully staffed with an Associate Dr., Physician Assistant, 2 Dietitians and a Nurse Director. His staff is very competent and informative. Dr. Vohra was not very hands on with the patients and had most of his staff take care of things. I am sure that if I had had any difficulty, he would have made himself available. He has a great aftercare support system with regular check-ups and his monthly support groups. I rate him highly and always recommend him. His program is excellent. His surgical competence is great and his bedside manner was so so. But he is a caring Dr. and his patients think very highly of him. He has performed many of these surgery's with much success.

I am a nurse researcher and did research on Dr. Vohra more than a year ago. I checked his medical history on a web site that cost me $10. but it gave me the information I needed about his education and his specialty in bariatric surgery -especially laparoscopic. I contacted his office and was told about the information sessions - and that I had to attend them before scheduling an appointment with him. I was very impressed at both sessions. He gave excellent research information about both the band and the RouxNY surgery - and his own surgical statistics. He made it very clear that the decision to have the surgery had to be based on realistic expectations and the commitment to change life style patterns related to eating and exercising for the rest of our lives after the surgery. The Nurse Practitioner and Nutritionist were there and they were kind but firm about the same message. The audience included people who had the surgery and those still considering it. All of the questions were answered thoroughly and no BS was allowed. Individuals who were concerned about the long wait and all of the medical work ups that were required were informed that it took a long time to put on the weight and many efforts to lose it. We were all sitting there because this was our last hope and they were right about me - it was my last hope. Dr Vohra is not a "fuzzy" physician. He is an excellent clinician and surgeon. He does not beat around the bush and does very little hand holding. He tells you what you need to know in clear terms - makes sure that you understand the risks - you have to review the risk forms several times before the surgery. He sees you at the beginning for a complete evaluation of your history and lab reports - which can take a long time to get done - I think I saw 6 different physicians based on my medical history- internist, cardiologist, gastroenterologist, psychiatrist, neurologist, and endocrinologist. I was seen several times by the nurse practitioner or physician assistant and the nutritionist - preparing me for the surgery. All of them were kind, concerned, supportive, and approachable. They were also very clear about the risks and benefits. They all visited me after the surgery. The practice is organized, well run - very structured prior to surgery- preparing me well for the day - and very structured after surgery - helping me with physical and psychological problems for the entire year. I am at my first year anniversary date now. My impression of this practice has not changed over time. I have referred several people to his practice and they have had similar consistent experiences. I was always informed of the risks/benefits of the surgery. When I went in for the bypass - I was ready for all of the complications I actually did encounter - needing three endoscopic balloon treatments for strictures and severe revulsion for all foods for almost 9 months post surgery - barely eating for the first 6 months. Lots of nausea and vomiting for most of the year. this is an extreme experience. I know people who had almost no complications and started to eat within a month. Dr Vohra is a skilled surgeon. He is also a caring man. At one pre-surgical support session he was obviously exhausted and told the audience that there were days when he thought he should do something easier - and then he heard the stories of the people who lost weight and were healthier and happier and he would re-commit himself to helping obese people. He was very genuine. As a nurse myself I also know that he was not making much money at the time since he was an employee of the hospital and on a set salary - if he had been private he would have been very well off already. If he has gone private - i applaud him - he deserves the money he earns. If his bedside mannner is less than I hoped for - the staff complement him well. Almost all of them were very caring and supportive. There were a few that were brisk and mechanical - but they changed their behavior on subsequent visits - which tells me that my comments to the Business manager were taken seriously and acted on. My rating for the Vohra practice is A+ Surgical competence is more important than bedside manner - If you can't have both in one surgeon - then the staff should complement the surgeon with the best bedside follow up - and give the practice the "fuzzies" that are lacking in the surgeon.

My first impresson of Dr Vohra was that he was confident in his ability, very patient and understanding. My impression of him did change over time, it just got better. I saw and even heard about his concern for his patients and he always had a smile for any patient in his office, he made me even more comfortable in my choice of wanting him as my surgeon. Out of all the specialists and doctors I have even met in my life (and thats quite a few from the average person) he has the greatest staff. They are always ready to lend an ear and be there when you help. And it shows in their dedication how hard they work for their patients, its not just a job to them. The only unfortunate thing is that as a surgeon Dr Vohra remains very buy and as much as he tries he doesnt have a hell of a lot of time to spend more time with his patients in the hospital. But what really helps is his addition of Dr Nishimura to his staff that adds that personal touch other surgeons are missing. Dr Vohra's aftercare program is a no brainer. They way he has it set up with his staff the only way to fail is if you don't follow it. He makes it clear about the risks of surgery and is adament that you follow all instructions before and after surgery. I would never have a problem recommending him to anyone. Dr Vohra is the whole package, not only is his skill as a surgeon is superb, but his attitude towards patients and his staff at his office and the staff at the hospital are just the best people I ever had to deal with in the medical field. I am gratefully I found him, between him and his staff I have my life back. I can't guarantee everyone will have the same experience, but this is just my opinion of my surgeon.

10/24/03 I went to Dr. Vohra's seminar and found him to be very approachable and professional. His staff were extremely warm and freindly and they seemed to really enjoy their role in Dr. Vohra's team. I'm a nurse and I've taken care of at least 10 WLS patients over the last few years so I have a pretty good sense of what I want from my bariatric surgeon. So far Dr. Vohra is my #1 choice, his surgical competence and bedside manner are both excellent. His aftercare program meets monthly at the hospital and is supposed to be excellent. You cannot make an appointment with him until after you attend his monthly seminar. During the one that I went to his computer was very uncooperative and quite a lot of time was lost on him trying to get the correct page to display for us. Because of this, many people got impatient and he sort of rushed through some of the info to make up for lost time. I know I personally didn't lose out on anything but there may have been some guests who felt they didn't get all the information they were looking for. Aside from that, I feel his skill and experience are enough proof that he's the best chioce for me and I'm looking forward to my initial consultation with him.

Dr. Vohra seems to me to have a distant kind of atmospere, I have not had much contact with him (but I can't complain about the skill of his surgery). I hope to have more contact with him later down the weight loss road. His staff is really great and I would like to single out Jill who is teriffic at her job.
